Toronto woman faces driving, cannabis charges after arrest on Highway 401

A 27-year-old Toronto woman is facing a slew of charges after allegedly fleeing police on Highway 401 near Brockville on Thursday.

Police said that at around 11:15 p.m., Leeds and the Thousand Islands OPP received a complaint about an eastbound vehicle on the 401, police said in a release Friday. When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly fled. With the help of other OPP police vehicles, police said, the driver was eventually collared and arrested.

Laila Bhagwandat, 27, of Toronto faces numerous charges including:

  • Possession of a stolen motor vehicle
  • Dangerous driving
  • Flight from police
  • Possession of identity documents
  • Breach of probation
  • Possession of breaking and entering tools

She is also facing Highway Traffic Act charges and a Cannabis Act charge including:

  • Stunt driving
  • Driving with no licence
  • Drive motor vehicle with cannabis readily available
