Suspect connected to Pueblo officer-involved shooting arrested

A suspect connected to an officer-involved shooting in Pueblo has been arrested.

Simon Eugene “Elijah” Gurule Jr., 21, is in custody, police said Thursday morning.

Gurule was allegedly at the scene of an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon on Pueblo’s west side, police said.

Gurule is accused of fleeing the scene in a stolen Volkswagen sedan, which was later found abandoned in an area of South Hudson Avenue and Catalpa Street, according to police.

Coda Hutton-Hayes, 18, was shot in the incident. Police said Hutton-Hayes, driving a stolen Subaru, hit an officer while fleeing an alley. Another officer at the scene fired at least one shot, hitting Hutton-Hayes in the torso. The Subaru crashed a short time later and Hutton-Hayes was taken to a hospital. Police said he would be arrested on his release from medical care.

Gurule is being held on suspicion of car theft, among other possible charges, police said.

The officer who was hit by the Subaru was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. The incident was the department’s first officer-involved shooting of 2019, a news release said.
