This week I bring you the first performance SUV from Ford, the 2019 Edge ST. This is the replacement for the Edge Sport model from recent years.
Starting under the hood, you’ll find a 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost with twin-turbos, mated to an 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Together they produce 335-horses and an impressive 380-pound feet of torque. All Edge STs come with a very capable all-wheel drive system that can transfer 100% of the power to either the front or the rear wheels as needed.
0-to-60 time is just under 6 seconds, impressive for a 4500-pound SUV. Top speed is limited to 130-miles per hour.
The Edge ST has sharp, distinct lines and features the ST grill similar to other Ford ST models, with fog lights below. 21” wheels, a rear spoiler, and square dual exhaust tips complete the aggressive exterior looks.
On the inside is a roomy interior that has good leg and headroom for five adults with a lot of cargo area in the back. Greeting you as you enter the cabin are step plates that tell you the Ford Performance division designed the SUV.
The ST embossed sport seats are bolstered, but still very comfortable. The gauges and driver information are bright and colorful and can be controlled from the steering wheel.
You’ll find light stitching on the door panels and the seats, and in the middle there is a nice console with a round shift knob. Also there are two lit cup holders, the electronic emergency brake, parking sensors, automatic parallel parking, and thankfully, a switch to turn off the start/stop system.
Forward from the shift knob is a covered storage area with a built-in phone charger and USB ports.
Above that is the 8” SYNC 3 infotainment system that is really easy to operate by touch and worked flawlessly. There you control audio, climate, Bluetooth, navigation system, apps, and settings.
You can also operate from SYNC3 Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and Travelink for real-time traffic info, fuel prices, weather, movie listings, sports scores, and even ski conditions.
The magic begins when you hit the Sport button in the center of the rotary gear shifter. This changes everything from transmission shifts, to steering, to suspension, and in this mode, the Edge ST comes to life. My only complaint is that in Sport mode, the transmission seems to hunt for the right gear at times, especially at speeds under 60-miles per hour.
Acceleration is very good in Sport mode, and there is a deep, guttural exhaust sound that is artificially piped inside the vehicle through the speakers, but that’s OK, it is enjoyable. Without Sport mode, Edge is unbelievably quiet thanks to an active noise cancellation system.
Standard Features, Safety and Options
The Edge ST comes well-equipped with standard features like leather & suede power seats, rearview camera with a lens washer, premium sound system, panoramic power moon roof, power hands-free tailgate, remote start, heated and cooled front seats, and heated rear seat.
On the safety side, you get adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, pre-collision assist, evasive steering assist, and reverse parking sensors.
This particular Edge has the $2695 performance brake package, which includes the red brake calipers, the 21” wheels, and some meaty Pirelli 265/40R tires. It also has the $495 cold weather package, which is a heated steering wheel, windshield wiper de-icer, and floor mats.
Ride and Drive
Edge ST is a lot of fun to drive especially in Sport mode, it handles very well with just a slight bit of lean in tight corners. Overall, it is quite composed in everyday driving.
There is also nothing else on the market like it unless you go to the Porsche Macan, BMW X5, or some of the SRT Dodge and Jeep models that are a lot more money.
What You’ll Pay
Total sticker price on my tester is just over $52,000, which is a good value. Fuel economy is 19 in the city and 26 on the highway.
I would stop just short of calling this a true performance SUV, but it looks hot, is very well-equipped, and it drives great. It’s a good compromise vehicle if a husband or wife, or both, have a heavy foot.
