Holidaymakers in search of a bargain should book flights to Cape Town this winter, according to the Post Office.
South Africa was the cheapest of 34 long-haul destinations surveyed for its annual Long Haul Holiday Report.
Tokyo came in second place, while the Indonesian island Bali was the third and is 17 per cent cheaper for British tourists than last September.
Prices dropped by 20 per cent
Visitors to South Africa have seen prices drop by 20 per cent since last autumn because of a weak rand.
Five Far Eastern destinations made it into this year’s top 10: Penang in Malaysia, Phuket in Thailand and Hoi An in Vietnam, in addition to Tokyo and Bali.
The Post Office calculated that costs are down in 14 long-haul destinations compared to last year. The biggest fall was in Rio, where prices have plummeted 33 per cent since the Olympics because the Brazilian real has crashed.
Singapore, Auckland and Darwin have also had double digit price drops.
Orlando was the cheapest of the US destinations surveyed. The US dollar is 0.8% stronger against the sterling since last September.
Winter sun seekers will see cash go further
The Post Office Travel Money surveyed 34 resorts and cities, adding up the price of 10 tourist activities, including a meal for two and a range of drinks. In Cape Town, the cost came to £51.48 – 10 per cent lower than in Tokyo (£57.40).
“After a summer when sterling gave holidaymakers less cash to spend in Europe, winter sun tourists will see their pounds stretch further in many of the most popular long-haul destinations,” said Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money.
“However, we advise them to consider the whole picture and not just the package price before booking.”
The Post Office only looked at long-haul but lots of medium and short-haul destinations also offer good value to British tourists at the moment.
In August, the Turkish lira fell to an all-time low against the pound, while the Swedish kronor has also slumped.
