Police forced to close Alexandra Bridge to nab climber

A 58-year-old man is facing charges of mischief and failing to comply with court orders after an out-of-bounds climb of the Alexandra Bridge Tuesday night.

The man’s stunt closed the interprovincial bridge for several hours and sent city police officers after him using borrowed fire department equipment to reach him and bring him to the ground.

The Ottawa Police Service received the call at about 9:20 p.m. and by 10 p.m. had alerted the public that the bridge was closed in both directions between Quebec and Ontario. They announced that the bridge off Sussex Drive had reopened about midnight.
