The Sierras of Erindale are near and dear to our Sporting Christmas hearts.
I checked the archives, and see mention of them in our Sporting Christmas updates dating back to 1999 — they’ve been there every year since, in some form, whether it be coffee clubs, informal canvasing, or their wonderful and long-running pancake and sausage breakfast.
The Sierras seniors condo held their 17th annual breakfast on Dec. 1, and — as always — that gathering will make a huge difference for local families who need some help over the Christmas season. The breakfast itself raised $1,045 from residents, family and friends, then they dug into their pockets and added an extra $4,010.

“Thank you,” writes Gary Mamer, “to the coffee club volunteers and Sierra residents and friends and family who opened their hearts and cheque books to make this Christmas brighter for Saskatoon’s children and seniors who are in need. Sierras of Erindale is a caring condo community of 250 residents, and we commend the StarPhoenix Sporting Christmas campaign and support our Salvation Army.”
It’s amazing what can be done with simple breakfast ingredients, huge hearts and a generous community. A big thanks, once again, to the good folks at the Sierras as we help the Salvation Army with its Christmas hamper program.
Rick and Bonnie Rowley donate in memory of their parents, Ken and Bunee Rowley and Marge and Jules Michasiw.
“We have been donating in their memory for the past number of years, as it was a cause very important to them,” they write, and it’s always good to hear from the Rowleys.
Ernie Boehm and long-time NHL’er Brad McCrimmon, both good sports and Salvation Army boosters, are remembered today, and the Riverside Optimist Club sent a portion of the fines they collect at their meetings — always a great idea.
“Merry Christmas to all!” writes Beth Rude, a former teacher of mine who I hold in high esteem, and I echo that sentiment as the air gets nippier and the season gets closer.
Our annual campaign supports the Salvation Army with its Christmas hamper program, and you can donate in the following ways:
