BOYS BASKETBALL

Senior guard Stone Sinek set a Fullerton record with 53 points Thursday night as the Indians beat La Quinta 79-50 in a nonleague game at Fullerton.

Santa Margarita put on a shooting clinic and routed Timpview, Utah, 87-51 in the first round of the Vivint Great Western Shootout on Thursday at Orem (Utah) High.

The eighth annual tournament drew nine teams, including Wasatch (Utah) Academy, ranked No. 19 in the nation, and Virginia’s 6AA champion, South County. Santa Margarita, the No. 2 team in Orange County, will play Denver East on Friday.

Canyon scored 24 points in the first quarter but went ice-cold in the second and ultimately lost to La Mirada 61-58 in the North Orange County Championships at Sonora.

The Comanches led 24-16 after eight minutes but were outscored 20-4 in the second quarter.

“We just never hit a shot,” said Canyon coach David Harrison.

Down 36-28 at halftime, the Comanches closed to within 61-58 on the Colby Waite’s 3-pointer in the last 15 seconds but couldn’t score again. Waite finished with 16 points and A.J. Perry scored 16 on five 3-pointers.
