Onion Lake man dies from ‘self-inflicted gunshot’ in front of RCMP

An investigational observer has been assigned to watch over an RCMP investigation after a 43-year-old Onion Lake man died from what RCMP called a “self-inflicted gunshot wound” on Monday.

On Saturday, Onion Lake RCMP received a complaint of an assault in the community and were able to identify a suspect, RCMP said in a news release.

On Monday, the suspect was found sitting inside a vehicle on the Onion Lake Cree Nation, RCMP said.

“Officers observed he was holding a firearm. While they were engaging with the individual, the suspect discharged his firearm and was injured by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was declared deceased at the scene,” the release stated.

“The officers did not discharge their firearms during this incident,” it added.

The decision to have the incident investigated by RCMP with an observer assigned by the province, as per the RCMP Act and RCMP policy, was made in consultation with the province, the release stated.
