One person missing after two vehicles plunge through the ice near Carleton Place

Ontario Provincial Police were investigating two incidents involving vehicles crashing through the ce of Mississippi Lake near Carleton Place during Sunday’s early morning hours.

According to police, as temperatures rose to above freezing on Saturday evening, a Volkswagen crashed through the ice trapping two people inside. One man was able to escape and was taken to hospital to be treated for hypothermia. A second person in the vehicle was still missing on Sunday afternoon and was believed to have died.

While investigating the call reporting the Volkswagen, police found an all-terrain-vehicle had also broken through the ice. Police found the ATV around 3:45 am. There were no injuries reported as a result of the second incident involving the ATV.

OPP officers remained at the scene Sunday. A team of police divers had been requested, but police said they weren’t sure when the team would arrive.

Police were warning residents to stay off certain sections of the lake, which is a popular spot for ice fishing.
