One person is dead after falling from the fifth floor of Vancouver Island University’s library Monday afternoon.
The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating and foul play is not suspected.
Just after noon, Nanaimo RCMP were called to attend a medical emergency at the Nanaimo university after someone fell from the library’s top floor.
The library was closed Monday and classes were cancelled.
Al Cumbers, associate vice-president of facilities and ancillary services for VIU, said students who saw what happened were being interviewed by police.
Cumbers said due to privacy considerations, he can’t give details about the age of the person or whether he or she is a student. The university did not release information about what led to the incident.
Students and employees were advised where to get counselling support, Cumbers said. Students can get counselling by going to Student Affairs at Building 200, and employees can connect with Homewood Health.
