Nine displaced by residential fire on Birchmount Drive

Nine people and a pet dog were displaced after fire damaged a basement unit in a residential building in the Pineview neighbourhood on Saturday, Ottawa Fire Service said.

A 911 call reporting smoke in the basement of the four-unit, two-storey complex at 1333 Birchmount Dr. was received at 12:07 p.m. When firefighters arrived, residents of the unit had evacuated and notified occupants of the other units.

The fire was declared under control at 12:32 p.m.

Four people were assessed by paramedics and one, a female, was transported to hospital for further assessment. One individual had minor injuries from the evacuation, Ottawa Fire reported.

Occupants were able to return to other units in the building.

A fire investigator was trying to determine the cause of the fire. No damage estimate was available as of Saturday afternoon.
