Jersey City resident celebrates new CD release

Jersey City resident and jazz flutist Andrea Brachfeld, along with Insight, are celebrating the release of her latest CD, “If Not Now, When?,” at the Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair on May 18 at 8 p.m. This is Brachfeld’s third jazz release in the past six years. 

Insight features pianist Bill O’Connell, bassist Harvie S, and drummer Jason Tiemann. “If Not Now, When?” features original tracks by Brachfeld and O’Connell, with the closing track featuring Brachfeld’s rendition of “Amazing Grace,” the albums only cover.

The new release continues her work from her previous release, “Lotus Blossom,” which saw a considerable amount airplay on jazz stations nationwide. Tickets for the show are $20 in advance and $22 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. Trumpets is located at 6 Depot Square. 

3rd annual Beerfest at Meadowlands Racetrack 

Beer will flow at the Meadowlands Racetrack as 67 breweries and cideries will participate in the 3rd annual Spring Beer fest. Participants include a number of local New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania craft brewers such as NJ favorites River Horse and Flying Fish, NY favorites like Defiant and Captain Lawrence, and PA’s Weyerbacher and Victory. 

The 3rd Annual Beer Fest will be held in the Backyard and on the East Apron. Doors open for VIP at 4:30 p.m. with general admission, $35 in advance or $45 at the door, at 5:30 p.m. and beer is poured until 9:30 p.m.

Special VIP only tastings include a Blue Point cask of Mosaic IPA with cucumber, Devil’s Backbone Oso Muerte, an Imperial Stout with chili peppers, Neshaminy Creek’s Leon, a Russian Imperial Stout and a 7 Mile’s Walter White. Meadowlands Racetrack is located at 1 Racetrack Drive in East Rutherford. 

Nimbus Dance Works to show up and coming talent 

Nimbus Dance Works will be showcasing its emerging choreographers from the NJ/NY area with two programs taking place on May 18 and 19 at 8 p.m.

The shows will feature guest curator, Keith Thompson. Both programs A and B will feature Justin Keith Perez and Nimbus2, Kanon Sapp and the looseKanon Dance Company, and resident choreographer Kailey McCrudden.

Program A will also feature Tammy Carrasco and the Wild Beast Dance, Veronica Cheeseboro, and Stefano Nappo. Program B will feature Evita Zacharioglou and Sebastian Abarbanell. Nimbus Dance Works is located at 165 Newark Ave., in Jersey City. Tickets can be purchased for $20 at 

An original production by Jose Marti Academy 

“Family and a Funeral,” an original comedy by Jose Marti Freshman Academy in Union City, can be seen live on May 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.

When a reclusive millionaire bequeaths his fortune to his estranged family, pandemonium ensues. About 25 students from JMFA will be involved with the show between the cast and crew, some of who are upper class understudies mentoring the freshmen.

This is JMFA’s third original production and was written by Randy Pradera. Jose Marti Freshman Academy is located at 1800 Summit Ave., in Union City. Admission for adults is $10, $5 for students.
