Man sentenced in Gilpin County murder of 63-year-old

A 27-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 44 years in prison for the murder of a 63-year-old victim in Gilpin County.

Jeffrey Mason Maynard pleaded guilty on Sept. 21 to second-degree murder, among other charges, in the death of John Cumby, according to the district attorney’s office.

In September 2017, Cumby’s body was found in a remote Gilpin County campground. Maynard was arrested Sept. 11, 2017, after a traffic stop in Ada County, Idaho. Maynard was driving Cumby’s van when arrested, and deputies found several possessions of the victim in the van, including his wallet with credit cards, his Social Security card and his passport.

Cumby, an Illinois resident, had been camping in the Rockies at the time of his death.

Maynard also pleaded guilty to two counts of identity theft and one count of motor vehicle theft.
