Kovacevic, Gundrum named Fanshawe’s top athletes

Soccer star Jade Kovacevic and national champion volleyballer David Gundrum were named Fanshawe College’s athletes of the year at the school’s 52nd sports banquet Friday night.

Kovacevic, a fourth-year striker from Acton, led the country with 30 goals and was the first Falcon to be named the top player in Canadian collegiate ranks. She was also Fanshawe’s top female athlete in 2016.

Gundrum, a fifth-year all-star from Port Elgin, led the powerhouse Falcons men to a perfect 25-0 season and was named player of the match in the national final at Red Deer. He earned a first-team tournament all-star honour and finished his career with seven provincial and national medals.

PROVINCIAL CHAMPS: The London Junior Devilettes hockey team rolled to a 6-0 record and the program’s first provincial title in 15 years last weekend in Mississauga.

The Provincial Women’s Hockey League entry allowed just one goal in pool play against Cambridge, Leaside and Ottawa, then beat the KW Rangers 3-2 in the quarterfinals, topped Stoney Creek 2-1 in the semis and beat regular-season champ Kingston 3-0.

London is playing in the Final Four Championship tournament in Oakville this weekend.

SYNCHRO STARS: Londoners Laura Emery and Payton Beckett and Ilderton’s Courtney McNaughton and Team Nexxice are in third place after the short program at the world synchronized skating championships this week in Helsinki, Finland.

They skate the long program Saturday morning. Nexxice won the gold four years ago and brought home a bronze medal in 2017.

WORLDS-BOUND: Forest’s Tyler McGregor and Wallacetown’s James Dunn are part of the Canadian team looking to defend its title at the IPC World Para hockey championships April 27-May 4 in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

McGregor and Dunn were key components in Hockey Canada’s silver medal at the Canadian Tire Para Hockey Cup in London in December and a two-game series split against the United States at Indian Trail, N.C., last month.

McGregor, a top scorer, was on the world champion team last year. He and Dunn earned silver at the Paralympic Games last year in South Korea.
