MILWAUKEE — It turns out the scary man with the chainsaw is just the janitor wearing a mask.

The Dodgers apparently bought into none of the pre-series puffery about the frightful nature of facing the Milwaukee Brewers’ bullpen. Justin Turner’s go-ahead two-run home run off Jeremy Jeffress in the eighth inning Saturday afternoon completed a comeback against that relief crew and gave the Dodgers a 4-3 victory in Game 2 of their National League Championship Series.

Eight of the nine runs the Dodgers scored in the two games at Miller Park came in the seventh inning or later against that ballyhooed bullpen. They are batting .333 (14 for 42) in this series against Brewers relievers (.115 against their two starters).

Friday’s late-inning rally came up one run short. But Turner’s shot Saturday allowed the Dodgers to come home with a split of the first two games in this NLCS. Game 3 is Monday at Dodger Stadium.

For most of Game 2, it looked like they would come home empty-handed.

Wade Miley rode in to defend the honor of starting pitchers everywhere, their very existence threatened by the encroaching forces of “bullpenning” and the avaricious relievers claiming more and more territory. He hobbled the Dodgers, allowing just two hits into the reclaimed land of the sixth inning.

As Brewers manager Craig Counsell prepared for the NLCS faced with trying to subdue the Dodgers’ offense with a weak group of starting pitchers, the expectation was those starters would be reduced to opening acts – and short ones at that. But Miley went into Game 2 against the Dodgers having allowed just one unearned run over 13 innings in two starts against them this season.

With Scott Van Slyke nowhere to be seen – he was a Miley-crusher, going 8 for 18 with three doubles and five home runs off him during their days in the NL West together – the Dodgers did nothing against Miley’s formula of keeping the ball down, down and down.

Turner had a one-out single in the first inning and David Freese followed with a drive over the wall in right-center field.

It was only over the wall temporarily. Brewers center fielder Lorenzo Cain measured it, jumped and caught it, robbing Freese of a two-run home run and the Dodgers of their only scoring threat against Miley.

Freese was the first of 16 Dodgers retired in order by Miley into the sixth inning. Chris Taylor’s two-out single there was the Dodgers’ second hit of the game and Miley’s last act of the day.

By then, the Brewers were on their way to building a 3-0 lead thanks to solo home runs by Orlando Arcia in the fifth (off starter Hyun-Jin Ryu) and Travis Shaw in the sixth (off reliever Alex Wood). Another run scored on a bases-loaded ground out after a single by Miley – the second hit in the game for the latest Brewers pitcher who rakes – and a double by Cain.

The Dodgers’ offense reported late for work again, starting the seventh with a walk and a single, bringing Cody Bellinger to the plate. With Josh Hader unavailable after throwing a season-high 46 pitches in Game 1, Counsell left right-hander Corbin Burnes in to face Bellinger. He singled to end an 0-for-17 start to the postseason and drive in a run.

A bloop single loaded the bases for Yasiel Puig. He struck out, snapped his bat over his leg and retired to the dugout to watch backup catcher Austin Barnes make it a one-run game, 3-2, with a bases-loaded walk.

An inning later, Chris Taylor beat out an infield single to start the inning against Jeremy Jeffress. Turner – who struck out four times in a game for the first time in his career Friday night – laid off Jeffress’ first two offerings then hammered a 2-and-0 splitter into the second deck of seats in left field.

More to come on this story.
