Inmate collapses in Jefferson County cell, dies at the jail

A 34-year-old man being held at the Jefferson County jail collapsed in his cell Friday and died, according to the sheriff’s office.

Philip Thomas, who was arrested by Wheat Ridge police on an outstanding warrant for a Denver traffic offense, was booked into the jail on Wednesday, according to a news release.

A deputy, on a routine check, found Thomas at about 1 a.m. on the floor of his cell. Thomas was unresponsive to CPR and other immediate life-saving measures. He was pronounced dead at the jail at about 1:50 a.m., according to the release.

“The death does not appear to be suspicious,” the sheriff’s office said. An investigation is ongoing and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of his death.
