Hudson County to host World War I centennial service Sunday

Here's an updated list of Veterans Day ceremonies across Hudson County.

Every year on Veterans Day we honor the service of all veterans that have served in the United States Armed Forces. This year, there are a number of events across Hudson County to pay tribute to those who bravely served:

Hudson County

Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and the freeholder board will host a World War I centennial tribute at Pershing Field on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. 

North Bergen

Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the commissioners are hosting the township’s annual Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11 in the Recreation Center, 6300 Meadowview Ave.

Guttenberg

The town’s annual Veterans Day ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11 in Monument Park, located at Boulevard East and 70th Street. The park and monument will be rededicated following recent renovations.

Kearny

— The city of Kearny will be honoring the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I on Beech Street and Kearny Avenue on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. Following the ceremony hosted by Post 99, the public is invited to join the veterans for a luncheon at the American Legion Post 99 on 314 Belgrove Dr.

— On Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m., all are invited to the Marine Corps Detachment, 286 Belgrove Dr, for a ribbon cutting for the opening of the Marine Corp Museum. This is an Eagle Scout project by Scout Kristion Tegge and will feature historical artifacts from Hudson County and the U.S. Marine Corps.

Hoboken

— On Sunday, Nov. 11, the Hoboken Museum will host a performance by actor/creator and Hoboken resident Douglas Taurel of a play based on the actual letters from a WWI soldier, Irving Greenwald, a member of the Lost Battalion. The performance will take place at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the museums website: $20 for non-members and $15 for museum members.

Jersey City

— On Saturday, Nov. 10, the Jersey City Veterans Day Parade will kick off from Dickinson High School, 2 Palisade Ave., at noon and conclude at City Hall. 

— Following the Jersey City Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 10, The Samuel R. Shelton VFW Post 2294, 98 Oak St., will host a Veterans Day celebration with food, festivities, and the music of the Spirit of Life Ensemble and the Mary Aiken Ensemble. 

— The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery will hold its annual “Honoring Our Heroes” Veterans Day tribute at Harsimus Cemetery, 435 Newark Ave. on Nov. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will feature a Flag Waving Annual Tribute for veterans. There will also be performances by the American Bombshells, MTV artist Lovari, and Art Markenstein. The event is free and open to the public. 

— The Korean War Veterans of Hudson County will be honoring all veterans on Monday, Nov. 12, at the Korean War monument at Washington and Dudley Street at 10 a.m.

West New York

— On Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., West New York is observing the 100th anniversary of the WWI Armistice by ringing the old “Town Bell.” The West New York Library will also be open for a showing of a PBS film based on the “Great War.”

Secaucus

— The annual Veterans Day ceremony will take place at the American Legion Post 118, 753 Second St., on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. Light refreshments will be served.

— A Veterans Day assembly will take place for Secaucus High School students on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 9 a.m. at the Arthur F. Couch PAC, 11 Mill Ridge Road.

Miscellaneous

— Honoring those who served the U.S., NY Waterway will provide free ferry/bus service for active-duty service members and military veterans who come in uniform or with a valid military ID on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11.
