Highrise fire near YMCA in Centretown closes streets

Ottawa police have closed Catherine Street and Argyle Avenue between Bank and O’Connor streets in Centretown on Wednesday afternoon as firefighters battle a blaze on the upper floor of a multi-unit highrise residential building.

According to Ottawa Fire Services, there were no injuries reported at 129 Catherine St., while evacuated residents were being provided shelter in OC Transpo buses.

Fire started to receive calls from the address at 2:52 p.m. Ottawa fire spokesman Scott Stilborn tweeted that the building’s rear wall had partially collapsed, and that firefighters are working to prevent the two-alarm blaze from spreading.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, as does the damage estimate. An Ottawa Fire Investigator was sent to the scene to determine the cause.
