Former Calgary teacher sentenced for sexually assaulting teen student

A former Calgary phys-ed teacher has been handed a 30-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a student over a two-year period.

Edwin Cay Arias, 46, a former teacher at Bishop McNally High School, was also ordered this week to pay a $200 fine.

Arias pled guilty in June to the offence, which involved a female student who was 16 years old when the inappropriate relationship started in 2007.

While the age of consent in 2007 was 14, police say Arias was in “a position of trust and authority over the victim for the duration of the alleged offences.”

Calgary’s Catholic school board told Arias not to return to the classroom once officials were advised of the charges against the teacher. The board said when the charges were announced in late May that the school had no record of any issues with the teacher.

Arias was employed by the board for 14 years and had been at Bishop McNally since 2005.
