DINOS ROUNDUP: Playoffs get underway

The University of Calgary Dinos women’s basketball team will look to continue its 15-game winning streak when it matters most, as it hosts the UNBC Timberwolves in a best-of-three Canada West quarter-final.

All games will be at the Jack Simpson Gym, with tip scheduled for 6 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday, if a third game is necessary.

The Dinos boast six different players averaging more than 8 points per game this season, allowing them to throw a balanced scoring attack at opponents on a nightly basis. A deep bench also allows them to keep everyone rested.

The Dinos will look to make use of a menacing full-court press, which has led to a Canada West-best average of 14.6 steals per game.

“The last 12 days have been very productive for us — both focusing on our play and UNBC,” said Dinos head coach Damian Jennings. “A mix of film, practice, and scrimmages have us ready to go, and looking forward to see how we perform.

“[UNBC] are particularly dangerous in the half-court offensively, and we are certainly going to have our work cut out defending their action and multiple all-star level individual talent.”

The winner of the series will move on to the Canada West semifinals.

MEN’S HOCKEY

It’s an all-Alberta playoff battle this weekend as the Dinos men’s hockey squad hosts the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

The first round gets underway Friday at 7 p.m., with Game 2 slated for Saturday at 6 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, goes Sunday at 6 p.m. Father David Bauer Arena will host all three contests.

The regular-season series between Lethbridge and Calgary has been very one-sided in favour of the Dinos. Calgary swept the four games, outscoring the Pronghorns by a 14-1 margin.

The winner of the best-of-three series will continue on to the Canada West semifinal.

The Dinos have already pieced together an undefeated regular season — they’re the first team in school history to have done that — but the games only get bigger as playoffs begin.
