Daily Poll: Do you agree with Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum’s move to cancel RCMP service?

True to his campaign promise, newly-elected Surrey mayor Doug McCallum and his Safe Surrey Coalition-dominated city council passed a motion Monday night to replace the city’s RCMP detachment with a municipal police force.

McCallum says Surrey residents want better police services, a more visible police presence on the street and the local accountability and oversight that comes with a municipal force.

“I believe very strongly that Surrey has outgrown the RCMP,” McCallum said on Monday, at the city’s first council meeting following the Oct. 20 municipal election.

The current contract with the RCMP began in April 2012 and is in force until March 2032. According to the terms of the agreement, it may be terminated on March 31 of any year by any party, as long as two years’ notice is given.

What do you think?
