One of my favorite, close-to-home river cruises to take is along the Columbia and Snake rivers, which wind their way through Oregon and Washington state. Packed with history and natural beauty, a journey along this historic waterway that traces its route through picturesque towns like Astoria, Portland and The Dalles is as rewarding as sailing through Europe on the Danube.
It turns out I’m not alone in enjoying this North American river cruise experience. American Queen Steamboat Company has made the extra effort to add additional sailings aboard the pretty American Empress this fall; special five-day voyages that operate conveniently from Portland (though the dock is actually in Vancouver, Washington) and follow in the footsteps of pioneers Lewis and Clark.
“Fall is a special time in the Pacific Northwest, and we’re happy to offer more sailings this year aboard the American Empress,” shares Ted Sykes, President and COO of American Queen Steamboat Company. “These five-day voyagers are perfect for travelers with busy schedules who may be looking to sample river cruising for the very first time, and they also offer excellent value.”
These new “Autumn in the Pacific Northwest” river cruises, which depart roundtrip from Portland on November 24, 28 and December 2, 2018 combine a river cruise journey with a complimentary pre-cruise hotel stay. In each port of call, American Queen offers a complimentary shore excursion, and the line also includes beer, wine and soft drinks with dinner as a matter of course.
American Queen Steamboat Company is also throwing in some particularly interesting extras on these voyages. Guests on the November 24, 2018 departure will be treated to an evening with the Columbia River Symphony at the historic Liberty Theatre in Astoria, Oregon. On the November 28 and December 2 voyages, take part in a special night of music, dancing and old-timey fun a the eclectic National Neon Museum in The Dalles, Oregon – boasting one of the largest collections of neon storefront signs in the world.
I took part in a fall sailing aboard American Empress a few years back and found it to be immensely pleasant, with the chill of the Pacific Northwest tempered by the warmth of the American Empress and her fantastic crew, and the richness of the ports along the way.
This is one affordable river cruise you don’t want to miss.
