Filmmaker Ada Solomon takes over the presidency of EWA – European Women’s Audiovisual Network from director Isabel de Ocampo.
The network’s mission is to encourage gender equality for women working in the audiovisual field, in terms of access and opportunities of employment and financing at European level.
EWA objectives include creating a strong community of professionals in the field who share their experiences and provide mutual support, as well as promoting the visibility of the audio-visual content made by women, in general, and by the network’s members, in particular.
European’s Women Audiovisual Network annually grants awards at the DOK Leipzig, WEMW-Trieste and La Coruña festivals.
Ada Solomon has been involved, over the years, in many of the EWA activities, such as moderating the debate called “Gender Representation in European Films” in 2014 at Berlin, holding a masterclass at the annual meeting of the EWA members in 2017, and this year, at Trieste, she attended the mentorship scheme for the women who are beginners in filmmaking.
Ada Solomon was born in Bucharest and she started her career in advertising; in 1993, she became a filmmaker. In 2004, she founded Hi Film Productions with Avi Karpick.
She produced and co-produced more than 50 movies that received a total of 180 awards at festivals worldwide. Ada Solomon co-produced movies in more than 15 countries in Europe, and the movies she worked for have been sold in over 50 territories.
Ada’s name is related to multi-awarded short films made by Cristian Nemescu (“Marilena de la P7”) and Radu Jude (“Lampa cu caciula”), the debut features of Radu Jude (“Cea mai fericita fata din lume”), Razvan Radulescu (“Felicia, inainte de toate”) and Paul Negoescu (“O luna in Thailanda”), and to the documentaries made by Alexandru Solomon (“Kapitalism, reteta noastra secreta”, “Cold Waves – Razboi pe calea undelor” and “Ouale lui Tarzan”).
Ada Solomon is the producer of the feature “Din dragoste cu cele mai bune intentii”, sigend by Adrian Sitaru, double awarded at the 2011 Locarno International Festival, and of Radu Jude’s movies “Toata lumea din familia noastra”, the winner of the Heart of Sarajevo 2012 Award, of the Bayard d’Or Grand Prix and of the Best Actor Award at Namur IFF, of the CinEast IFF Grand Prix, “Aferim!” – selected in more than 30 festivals and awarded at Berlin 2015 with the Silver Bear for the Best Director, with the big prize at IndieLisboa, with the FIPRESCI Award at Jameson CineFest Miskolci, with the Audience Award at Let’s CEE Film Festival and with Bayard d’Or at the Namur Francophone Film Festival, and “Inimi cicatrizate”, rewarded, among others, with the Jury’s Special Award at Locarno and Silver Astor – Best Director Award at Mar del Plata Film Festival.
She is the producer of the feature “Pozitia copilului” (2013), directed by Calin Peter Netzer, the firt Romanian feature rewarded with the Golden Bear at Berlin.
She produced the debut movies of directors such as Cristi Iftime, Ivana Mladenovic, Stefan Constantinescu, Adriano Valerio, Federico Bondi and Martha Berman.
In 2013, Ada Solomon was the winner of the Eurimages Award for Co-Production, an award granted by the European Film Academy that recognizes the decisive role of the co-productions in the European film industry.
One year later, she worked at the “Toni Erdmann” co-production directed by Maren Ade, filmed in Romania and nominated at the “Best Foreign Language Film” category of the 2017 Oscar Awards.
In January 2018, she receive the Central European Initiative Organization Award for her contribution to the intercultural dialogue at the Alpe Adria Trieste Festival.
Ada Solomon is the Distribution Manager of microFILM and the initiator of the NexT International Film Festival. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the European Film Academy and the Coordinator for Romania of the European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE).
