9 Golden Globes surprises, snubs and more as the nominations are revealed

Nominations for the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards arrived on Thursday and while a lot of the news was expected – “A Star Is Born” continues to roll in the early rounds of awards shows’ nods – there was plenty you might not have guessed in the office pool, such as the fact that “Vice,” the Dick Cheney biopic that doesn’t arrive in theaters until Dec. 25, leads the pack with six nominations.

Still, you knew the movie that stars a bulked-up Christian Bale as a Cheney look-and-sound-alike was going to get some measure of love from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the quirky organization of mostly unknown film writers from around the world.

We dug into the full list of nominations and came up few a snubs and surprises in a variety of categories. Such as …

1. Diversity ruled: In one of the best surprises, three of the five films nominated for best motion picture, drama – “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Black Panther” tell stories of black and men and women. All three were directed by black men, Barry Jenkins, Spike Lee, and Ryan Coogler, with Lee also grabbing a nomination. Add to that a nomination for best motion picture, comedy or musical, “Crazy Rich Asians” as well as its star Constance Wu, and in the TV drama categories both “Killing Eve” and its star Sandra Oh, and it was a promising day for Asian stories and stars, too.

2. Except when diversity didn’t: The exception to the rule was the shut-out for women directors, such as Marielle Heller, whose “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” earned nominations for stars Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant but none for the woman who made it.

3. No love for Clint Eastwood: The legendary Clint Eastwood has 14 Golden Globe nominations, five wins and a Cecil B. DeMille Award, but his new movie “The Mule,” for which he wore all three of his hats – actor, director and producer – got snubbed. It’s said to be his last acting job and at 88 he might have attended his last Globes.

4. Lots of love for Nicole Kidman: Actress Kidman is one nomination behind Eastwood now after grabbing her 13th for her work in “Destroyer,” for which she disappeared into the role and an almost-unrecognizable makeover to play a broken-down anti-hero of a Los Angeles detective.

5. ‘First Man’ grounded: The film is a hero’s journey, the story of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, and it reunited Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle, both of whom won Golden Globes in 2017 for “La La Land.” Despite that pedigree – and perhaps because of its flag- and race-related controversies – its only nominations went to Claire Foy for supporting actress for her role as Armstrong’s wife and Justin Hurwitz for the score.

6. ‘Who Is America’ – really?!: Actor Sacha Baron Cohen got nominated for best actor in a TV series, musical or comedy, for his Showtime series “Who Is America,” and while he’s often been great this series really wasn’t all that. Maybe the multiple characters and multiple accents appealed to the multi-cultural and polyglot members of the HFPA. Or the publicity-grabbing pranks he pulled on a range of politicians.

7. Hello ‘Americans,’ and goodbye!: The FX spy drama got its first-ever nomination for best TV series, drama, after its sixth and final season earlier this year. Stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys each got their second Globes nominations for their work as KGB agents undercover in 1980s America.

8. Double-dippers: Actresses Amy Adams and Regina King both earned a pair of nominations. They’re up against each other in the best supporting actress in a motion picture category, Adams for her work as Lynne Cheney in “Vice,” King for her portrayal of the mother of a young African-American woman fighting to clear her husband who has been wrongfully accused of rape in “If Beale Street Could Talk.” They meet again in the category of best actress in a TV movie or limited series where Adams is nominated for her part in HBO’s “Sharp Objects” and King is up for her role in Netflix’s “Seven Seconds.”

9. Musical notes: The fact that music-heavy movies like “A Star Is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” are considered dramas and not musicals isn’t as big a surprise as calling the stranded-in-space movie “The Martian” a comedy (as the Globes did a few years ago). But the musical categories did include the unexpected, such as the fact that “Mary Poppins Returns,” which did get nominated for best motion picture, comedy or musical, did not got a nod in the category of best original song. Not that it would have won, given the presence of the Lady Gaga-sung “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born,” which has to be the odds-on favorite to win this category at the Globes and the Oscars, too. But, you know, that’s a surprise.
