What is it? The most powerful Ram pickup of all time.
Why is it important? Well, anytime anything this side of an 18-wheeler can claim 1,000 pound-feet of torque, it’s time to pay attention.
Indeed, the numbers attributed to various member of the Ram HD family — Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Power Wagon, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Limited — are truly incredible. The most extreme payload that can be carried is 3,490 kilograms, which would be a nice towing capacity for most vehicles. That same truck can actually tow 15,955 kg — that’s 35,100 pounds! — when equipped with all the bells and whistles. You know you’re talking a different breed of truck when the weakest engine — literally the whimp of the litter — is a 6.4-litre Hemi with 400 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque.
But then most families — even truck families — don’t have a 6.7 Cummins “High Output” turbodiesel that cranks out 1,000 pound feet of torque — at 1,800 rpm, no less! How much turbo boost are they cranking into this thing anyway? Actually, it’s 33 psi. There’s a lesser version of the Cummins — is FCA gonna call it the “Low Output?” — that only generates 850 lb.-ft. Piker!
Making the 2500 and 3500 Rams even more robust is an all-new frame consisting of 98.5 per cent high-strength steel that uses no less than six crossmembers and a fully boxed rear subframe. And making sure that said robust frame doesn’t get unruly, FCA adds to two Active-Tuned Mass Modules that “search out unfavourable vibrations and apply countermeasures to eliminate them.” The 2019 Rams also feature Frequency Response Damping shocks on all four corners. Active-level air suspension is also available on the 2500s and 3500s and includes a Bed-lowering Mode to make trailer hook-ups a breeze.
On a more pedestrian note, there is far more storage inside the new Ram cabin — as much as 258 litres and 12 separate stowage compartments, says FCA. There’s also a wireless charging dock, up to 5 USB outlets — including type C — and optional dedicated/assignable switches. Ram also claims Mega Cab is the roomiest in the business with rear seats with 15 degrees of available recline and 1,040-millimetres of rear seat legroom.
When is it coming? The second quarter of 2019.
Should I buy one? That depends. Do you need to tow the Empire State Building while swaddled in luxury only slightly less opulent than a Mercedes-Benz? Well then, damn straight you need a Ram Heavy Duty. As for the rest of us, being able to tow more than 15,000 kilograms just might be a little overkill.
