In February, Ford unveiled its new fourth-gen Focus ST, announcing that the Sport Technologies derivative of the Focus Mk4 would be sold in five-door hatchback and estate body-styles like its predecessor. The car made its debut in hatchback form, and now, the wagon has finally been revealed.
Aside from the additional cargo space brought about by the extended cabin, the ST wagon is identical to the hatchback in terms of specification. Like the hatchback, this one will be available in both petrol and diesel forms.
The petrol variant is powered by an all-aluminium 2.3 litre EcoBoost twin-scroll turbocharged unit offering 276 hp at 5,500 rpm and 420 Nm of torque from 3,000 rpm to 4,000 rpm. Mechanical highlights include an electronically-actuated wastegate, which offers closer control of boost pressures for optimised engine performance, as well as a bespoke air intake and exhaust system, along with a new intercooler.
The other engine option is a 2.0 litre EcoBlue variable geometry turbo diesel, and this puts out 187 hp at 3,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 2,000 rpm and 3,000 rpm. Two transmission choices are available – the petrol engine can be paired with a six-speed manual, which has been enhanced from before, or a new seven-speed automatic, while the diesel will ship with the six-speed manual. Curiously, there’s no mention of an automatic option for the oil burner.
The ST features a Borg-Warner electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD), the company’s first application of this in a front-wheel drive model, and the petrol variant also comes with a launch control function, although customers will need to specify the Performance Pack for its inclusion.
New bits to the ST – which sits 10 mm lower than a standard Focus – include selectable drive modes (Slippery/Wet, Normal, Sport and, for models specified with the Performance Pack, Track) as well as anti-lag, which enables boost pressure to build faster on demand and improves power delivery in Sport and Track drive modes.
The suspension system features Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) units, which monitors suspension, body, steering and braking inputs every two milliseconds and tailors damping response accordingly. The brakes have also been upgraded, the system on the new car offering almost four times the fade resistance performance of that managed by the third-gen.
The front half of the wagon’s interior mirrors that of the hatchback – the black and grey cabin gets metallic hexagonal and satin silver decorative elements to provide highlight contrasts, and the Recaro seats can be specified with high-quality cloth, leather, or partial leather and Dinamica options. Dedicated ST cues include a sports steering wheel, an ST-embossed aluminium gear knob, scuff plates and alloy pedals.
Like on the hatch, there’s a SYNC 3 infotainment system with an eight-inch colour touchscreen and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and as for driver assist equipment, items on the list include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with stop & go (a.k.a. low-speed follow), speed sign recognition and lane-centring, as well as Active Park Assist 2, which provides fully-automated parking to be accomplished at the press of a button.
