Police did not release the names of the two passengers of the SUV who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people were killed Thursday afternoon when an SUV was struck by a tractor trailer on a Chester Township highway.

Police did not release the names of the passengers of the Nissan Pathfinder who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their names will be released once their next of kin is notified, according to a release from the Chester Township Police Department.

The driver of the SUV was flown to Morristown Medical Center, but police did not release their condition Thursday night.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to all those involved in this incident,” police said in the release.

The Pathfinder was trying to make a left turn from Furnace Road onto Route 206 South when it was hit by the tractor trailer which was driving north on the highway, officials said.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation by the Chester Township Police, Morris County Sheriff’s Office and Morris County Vehicular Homicide Unit.

Route 206 was closed for about five hours while the crash scene was cleared, police said.
